A Belle Haven customer needed to replace an older air conditioning system that had developed a refrigerant leak. The outdoor equipment was located on a rooftop area, so the project required careful planning, safe access, and extra attention to the equipment platform and roof protection.
Greenwich HVAC replaced the system with American Standard equipment, including a variable-speed air handler and a 14 SEER condensing unit. The existing refrigeration lines were flushed, pressure tested, evacuated, and the new system was charged with R-454B refrigerant.
Because the existing rooftop platform was made from wood and had rotted, we built a new angled platform using composite materials and stainless steel screws. Extra rubber padding was added beneath the platform to help protect the roof and create a longer-lasting installation.
Inside, we installed a new hydro coil, connected the new air handler to the existing ductwork, and fabricated custom sheet-metal transitions so the new equipment would fit properly. We also added a new safety pan float switch, wet switch, and condensate pump with a safety switch.
The existing wiring had become disorganized over time, so we cleaned it up as part of the installation. After the equipment was installed, the system was started, tested, and checked for proper operation.
One of the biggest challenges was access. The equipment was on a roof above another roof, and there was no practical way to use a crane. Our team used a specialized ladder crane to safely bring the new unit up and remove the old unit from the roof. The customer was very pleased with the finished result.
